Stress Reduction Programme and Pathways to Better Living
PROF JOHN JACKSON PHD FRCPATH AND DR PADRAIC DUNNE PHD
Stress is inevitable and how we deal with stress largely determines whether or not we stay healthy or perhaps develop a wide range of stress associated disorders. These conditions often manifest as anxiety, depression, panic attacks, cardiovascular and other conditions.
Stress management programme
We offer an eight week programme of three one hour sessions of mindfulness based cognitive therapy and three sessions of graded exercise therapy.
Mindfulness based cognitive therapy
Mindfulness based cognitive therapy is a form of therapy which teaches you to recognise behaviour patterns and thought processes which keep you ruminating on the past or worrying about the future. It teaches you to live in and accept the present moment. Learning techniques which predominantly focus on your breath helps to induces a more relaxed state of mind which has been shown to have many extremely positive and wide ranging effects.
Graded exercise programme
An individualised graded and tailored exercise programme is designed to accommodate your current level of fitness. The programme will be a mixture of aerobic and resistance training. This mode of training reduces levels of stress hormones and increase the circulation of hormones such as endorphins which promote well-being. Appropriate levels of exercise have been clearly shown to reduce the incidence of a wide range of disorders associate with stress.

Over-eating and Weight Loss Programme
Prof John Jackson PhD FRCPath,, Dr. Padriac Dunne PhD, Cloin McAdoo and Robert Lynch
Dieting or exercise by themselves (or even in combination) sometimes don’t lead to sustained weight loss. We have designed a four month programme which uses a combination of psychological approaches to over eating, nutritional advice and graded exercise programmes which aims to tackle some of the fundamental problems associated with chronic weight gain.
Psychological issues in overeating. (Four sessions)
There can be many triggers which provoke over-eating and habits which sustain it. Our programme includes four one hour individual sessions with a trained psychotherapist. These sessions explore the habits and triggers applicable in each individual. In this way, inappropriate triggers and habits become recognised and new ways of dealing with the underlying emotions are suggested. This approach facilitates the development of a more mindful and balanced approach to eating.
Nutritional Overview. (One session)
Your nutritional intake is examined in detail problem areas are highlighted. Suggestions are then regarding tailoring you total nutritional and calorific requirements to a more balanced diet.
Graded exercise programme. (Two sessions)
An individualised graded and tailored exercise programme is designed to accommodate your current level of fitness. The programme will be a mixture of aerobic and resistance training. This form of training improves muscle tone, enhances the burning of calories and promotes well-being.
Cost of programme €560.00

Home exercise programme
Prof John Jackson PhD FRCPath, Robert Lynch, Colin McAdoo
Regular exercise is crucial for health and can help in dealing with many common disorders such as type 11 diabetes, cardiovascular disease and cancer. However, gyms can be intimidating places for some and many people would like to take more exercise without having to visit a gym. If you fit into this category, our home exercise programme would be ideal for you. This programme requires an initial visit to us for the evaluation and design of an individualised programme tailored to your capabilities and needs. This is followed by two further follow up visits at week three and week eight. There is also an option, of an additional session, to review your nutritional intake
Cost of programme €195.
Cost of programme with nutritional review. €270
Relaxation, mindfulness, meditation and living in the moment.
Our nervous system, endocrine system (hormones) and immune system are the important pathways that regulate our bodies and they are all intimately connected. We often forget, that our current hectic lifestyles are a very recent phenomenon, especially when we consider how long adaption takes in evolutionary terms. For example, in Ireland, electrification is a very recent development, occurring in many places in Ireland from the 1930s to the 1960s. Before electricity, our lives were very much governed by the transition from day into night and the changes which come with the seasons. When darkness came, we rested in our cabins. This is the lifestyle our systems adapted to over thousands of years and these natural rhythms determined how all of the bodies regulatory pathways functioned. All of this natural regulation has been very quickly lost with our modern lifestyles and we are constantly active and on the move. As a result, there are so many illnesses that these modern stresses impact on. We cannot turn back the clock, but we can take steps to bring back some natural balance into our lives.
Eastern cultures have long recognised this and incorporated meditation processes into their lives. In Western culture, religion and prayer often fulfilled this function. Mindfulness is essentially a secular form of meditation without any attached religious or belief system. This helps us to live more in the moment and dispense with the troubles of the past or our fears about the future
We host regular classes on mindfulness and it is also available on a one to one basis.
