John started his career as a scientist specialising in Clinical Immunology and became a Fellow of the Royal College of Pathologists. He is unique in Ireland with these qualifications which span the interphase between clinical medicine and science. His particular expertise is the role of the immune system in health and disease. He practised for over thirty years at the Department of Clinical Immunology, St James Hospital, and has lectured extensively at under-graduate and post-graduate level to medical and science student at Trinity College Dublin, The Dublin Institute of Technology and The Royal College of Physicians.
